Q: What does D.H. Rumsfeld and Jean Cocteau have in common?

A: The Blood of a Poet!

In 2003 Hart Seely of Slate magazine posted the now classic Poetry of D.H. Rumsfeld.
In a tribute to the outgoing secretary of defence we repost these poetic works for your consideration.

The Unknown-
As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know
We don't know.

Glass Box
You know, it's the old glass box at the—
At the gas station,
Where you're using those little things
Trying to pick up the prize,
And you can't find it.
It's—
And so you keep dropping it
And picking it up again and moving it,
But— of you are probably too young to remember those—
Those glass boxes,
But— they used to have them
At all the gas stations
When I was a kid.

Happenings-
Your going to get told lots of things
You get told things every day that don't happen.
doesn't seem to bother people, they don't—
It's printed in the press.
The world thinks all these things happen.
They never happened.
Before in fact the story's there
That the world is constantly being fed
Things that haven't happened.
I can tell you is,
It hasn't happened.
It's going to
happen.

Comments:
Corny, these are so beautiful and moving, thank you. I am going to print them out and keep them in the bathroom for future use. And all the more poignant in light of his announcement today!

But. It raises a question, yes it does, a question that burns in the pea-brain-o'-th'-sloth: could Cocteau fight like Rummy?

Rums would obviously kick cocteaus arse. He is schooled in the kung-fu method and practices these moves while discussing ancient wisdom like "War not determine who right. War determine who left"
Maybe he will take poetery class at the Learning Annex and explore his gift now that he's got some time on his hands.

All I have to say is BUH-BYE you piece of shit. But then does this mean he won't be tried as a war criminal? I mean is that why he's stepping off? Ehhh...I'm not gonna bum out yet, I'm still too elated. I can't fight this feeling anymore.

I'm relieved. The world aint going to go down the shitter quite so fast. massachusetts got it's first black governor, voters rejected an abortion ban in south dakota, arizona defeated a proposed marriage ban, the people made themselves heard and they're sick of this arrogant neo-con bull-shit.

the first transexual was elected to office in hawaii

Hey capt'n, wheres the new pad in LA? Are you really moving there? What's going on?!?!

Hi Frienda,
Glenda, Brenda, and I are moving to LA very soon! We just got a house to rent yesterday, in Echo Park, (next to Silverlake & near Sunset blvd & downtown.) We're gonna move gradually thru November, 'cause we gotta clean & paint etc. up there.
Yep, San Diego was never meant to be permanent for us, and now it's time to go.
But we are gonna do a bi-metro lifestyle for at least the first year, if not more. We have many beloved clients, students, and selfish little takers here in SD, and some beloved friends, plus my beloved favorite surf spots. We have an ultra cheap office/studio here, so we're keeping that, and we'll drive down and spend like 2 days a week here, and crash at the office.
Maybe that was an overshare, Frienda, but you asked what's going on.

This is very exciting, that is a great neighborhood, I expect we'll get to see a little more of you, we go to LA a couple of times a year.

DUBZ! right you are. The dems have a lot of good people to run in 08 but I wonder if Hillary will ultimalely be the one, many people think she's abrasive (though i tend to think thats sexist 'cause all politicians are abrasive, right?)

meanwhile.... what about that crazy show by LYnn... I was relieved when you said you weren't down with it. Lynn is painting her inner lesbian? Me no understandy

CAPT'N!!! I am so excited you will be in Echo Park. My good pal lives there and now when I visit, I'll have the added bonus of seeing you and the Mrs. This is so great. I wish you guys the bestest of luck moving and all.

And lemme just say that I did not know Rummy was a poet. Now I feel kinda bad about hating him so. I think I need to approach him about a full length manuscript.

Dear pd and frienda:
Bring it. We're gonna have a Pimp My Yard party to get it all ready and cute for beloved Norf*ckineasters who may be passing thru town on occaision. Just so you know.

Hi peeds. If Rummy agrees to write a manuscript about his experiences with coin opperated penny arcade games I'd like to negotiate an option for first look. I'm thinking to cast Jane Lynch as the hard drinking midway con-artist who first shows Rummy how to lie and cheat, yet comes to regret corrupting the innocent child and eventually goes on a killing spree in Washington... in an alcoholic blackout.

Jane Lynch! Great casting Corns. She can pull off a difficult roll such as this. But how can we get Helen Mirren in the film?
